Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

At WSG we work to ensure our children understand that:

  • Everyone is welcome
  • Everyone is different
  • We respect our differences

Equity and Equality

By promoting equality, there is an assumption that everyone benefits from the same support.  In order to strive for everyone to succeed, we promote ‘equity’.  The concept of equity is that everyone gets the support and resources that they need to be successful.

Diversity and Inclusion

At WSG we celebrate diversity.  We value the diversity of people and perspectives.  Our curriculum is designed with diversity in mind so that our children can better understand the multi-cultural world around them.

We also aim to be a highly inclusive school, where unique individuals work together towards success for all.

Wonersh and Shamley Green C of E Primary School is committed to ensuring equity of provision and opportunity throughout the school community for both children, parents, staff and governors. To achieve this, our equality objectives are as follows:

  • To promote cultural development and understanding through a rich range of experience, both in and beyond the school
  • To ensure children of all backgrounds and all needs are included in our school equally
  • To tackle prejudice and promote understanding in relation to people with disabilities
  • To ensure that all pupils are given similar opportunities with regards to after-school clubs and activities
  • To allow equal access to information for all parents
  • To ensure the school environment is accessible as possible to all pupils, staff and visitors.

These objectives are reflected in our equality information and objectives, our equity policy and our accessibility plan and other school policies related to teaching and learning.

How we promote the inclusion of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities is explained on our SEND Inclusion page.

The Equality Act and Protected Characteristics

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Everyone in Britain is protected.

The Equality Act protects people against discrimination because of the protected characteristics that we all have. Under the Equality Act, there are nine protected characteristics.

From these nine, we have decided to focus on eight characteristics which we have called:

Age, Gender, Disability, Race, Religion, Friend and Love Preference, Family, and Having a Baby.

We teach the children about how we can protect these characteristics throughout the curriculum and we choose texts within the curriculum that supports understanding of these characteristics.
