Maths

We implement our maths curriculum through the use of a variety of teaching and learning styles but predominantly a mastery approach. We follow the White Rose Maths planning as well as using other resources for example NCETM and Maths No Problem textbooks. A proportion of time is spent reinforcing number to build competency. Teachers support the idea of depth before breadth and build in plenty of time for reasoning and problem solving. There is a balance between whole-class, group and independent activities giving opportunities to talk and collaborate, thus embedding and enhancing learning.

For each new concept introduced, children are encouraged to use concrete manipulatives before moving on to pictorial representations before finally moving to an abstract approach using numbers and key concepts with confidence. This is because we recognise the importance of establishing a secure foundation in mental calculations, and recall of number facts, before standard written methods are introduced. During maths lessons, we encourage children to ask as well as answer mathematical questions. They are provided with opportunities to use a wide range of resources such as: tens frames, number lines, number squares, base 10 and place value counters to support their work. Wherever possible, we encourage the children to apply their learning to everyday situations.

In Maths we use the White Rose Maths Hub planning and adapt these materials depending on the class cohort.
